Sony Announces Pricing And Release Date Of New, Even Slimmer PS3 [IMAGES]

As part of their big press conference at Tokyo Game Show last night, Sony announced yet another PlayStation 3 hardware revision. This will be the third form factor for the console, and will be even thinner than the last version; according to Sony’s official blog post about it, it’s “20% smaller and 25% lighter” than the second-generation hardware.
The new model will be available in both 250GB and 500GB variants, which is an upgrade from the current model’s 160GB and 320GB options. Unfortunately, that new form factor and increased storage capacity comes with an increased price tag as well. The 250GB version will cost $269 stateside, compared to $249 for the current 160GB model. The 500GB model will be $299, which matches the 320GB model’s price point.
It’s worth noting that Sony is sweetening the deal with a bundled game, however. The 250GB version will come with a copy of Uncharted 3 game of the year edition, and the 500GB model will come with Assassin’s Creed III. For those who don’t already own a PS3 (or those games), this actually isn’t a bad deal. It’s a bit disappointing that this hardware revision won’t allow Sony to match the Xbox 360′s $199 price point, though.
Sony also announced release dates for both console variants. The 250GB bundle with Uncharted 3 will be available on September 25, and the bigger, Assassin’s Creed III bundled unit will be available on October 30.
